Reduction Mammoplasty is a procedure that consists in diminishing the size of the breast and at the same time lifting them, offering the patient the following advantages:
Eases the weight on the dorsal spine (Dorsalgia and Cervialgia)
Resolves some of the dermatological pathologies such as intertriginous irritation or infection (chafing of the skin) due to the rubbing of the skin below the breast combined with humidity and heat.
Improves proportion with respect to the torso making the patient look thinner.
Improves the consistence or the touch and feel when palpated.
There are numerous techniques for reducing the mammary gland and the skin that covers it. The technique chosen will depend on the size, form and the versatily the Plastic Surgeon has to apply them on a case by case basis. This will depend on the experience the Plastic Surgeon has with each technique. A Reduction Mammoplasty can be done with or without liposuction depending on the preferences of each patient. These are the most common techniques and the resulting scar from the procedure:
1. Reduction Mammoplasty only with Liposuction (especially used for minor reductions on breasts with a bland or fatty consistency and the nipple-areolar complex
cannot be more than 22 cm from the furculum to the sternal or breast bone notch.
2. Reduction Mammoplasty only with a Periareola or around the areola scar (used on
large breasts with a tubular aspect in order to flatten and give a proper roundness).
This technique is applied on medium reductions.
3. Reduction Mammoplasty with only a vertical scar (used for medium reductions
and breasts with the nipple-areolar complex facing down)
4. Reduction Mammoplasty with a J or L scar.
5. Reduction Mammoplasty with an Anchor scar or Inverted T (the most common
zand is used on Hypertrophy III and on Hypermastia or Gigantomastia).
We recommend for better scarring leaving the breast with the least possible tension on the sutures considering that the greater the tension the increased possibility of bad scarring. No hot water during bathing for the first two weeks is also essential.
Reduction Mammoplasty is a complicated procedure where every minor detail must be taken into consideration.
